Thoughts, loosely organized

You can subscribe to my blog using an RSS reader and this link: https://francisbeaudet.com/feed/feed.xml

If you don't already use an RSS reader, the Government of Canada put together a page that explains what an RSS feed is.

My daily browser is Vivaldi. This browser automatically detects feeds as I browse and lets me subscribe with one click.

  1. Facebook's last stand

Facebook's behaviour has been reprochable for a long time now. Manipulating its users, charging businesses to appear in the feed of people that explicitly follow them, and being a place for all sorts of fringe groups to advertise. After the clear support given to the new president, they had to go.

  2. Everywhere you look, Amazon is there

Next on my list is Amazon. The convenience of their shopping platform and the interesting content that can be found on Prime is what made me a customer. But leaving Amazon is much harder than it seems.

  3. Twitter, it was easy to leave you

I emptied my twitter account and deleted the app In Nov 2022. The decision was easy to make because there didn't seem to be any doubts even back then as to where it was headed. Two years later, I have a hard time understanding why anyone would still be there.

  4. At least, I didn't vote for him

I'm writing this about a week after the American president's inauguration ceremony where the Nazis took over and revealed their hand for all to see. I'm looking at the clown show from the neighboring country and I imagine that's how the people in Poland felt.

In truth I don't know, I wasn't there. But that is the thought that came to my head.

  5. A little blog update

I am currently in the process of closing a lot of my social media accounts and I wanted to reclaim my space on the web. In this process, I have made some updates to my site.

  6. A humane guide to Mastodon

Everyone knows this old saying: If you need to explain a joke, it ain't funny. Unfortunately, Mastodon is one of those things that need some explaining. I thought that I could take a shot at an onboarding guide that doesn't require a degree in serverology. Instead, I want to focus on the people that use Mastodon.
